A fine Heritage variety - put back into seed production by Kings Seeds due to increased popularity in growing Kales.
Cottagers has unusual green/purple leaves, is extremely hardy, providing a tasty supply of leaves throughout the winter. Unlike other kales, a secondarycrop of tasty side shoots up the stems in early spring. Originated from a cross between a kale, brussels sprouts and then recrossed with purple sprouting brocolli.
This breeding was found of interest by Charles Darwin and mentioned in his writings of the Gardeners Chronicle of 1860, and his book "Animals and Plants under Domestication" in 1868.

Where to Sow

Sow seeds thinly in a well prepared seed bed in shallow drills 1.5cm (1/2") deep in short rows. Alternatively sow the seeds thinly in seed trays or two seeds per cell in modules under glass at 13°C.

What to do Next

Outdoor sowings should be thinned out to 7-10cm (3-4in) apart, then once plants are large enough, lifted and transplanted to their final planting positions 45cm (18in) apart and 60cm (24in) between the rows to grow on to maturity. As soon as glasshouse seedlings show their first pair of leaves, prick off into trays 5cm (2") apart or thin modules to one seedling per cell. Gradually harden off before planting out when about 15cm (6") tall to the same spacing’s as detailed above.
