Kohl Rabi Superschmelz

If you're looking for some slightly more unusual vegetables to grow, why not try Kohlrabi. Kohl Rabi is a member of the brassica family. Superschmelz is a giant variety with white and light green flesh, which is capable of reaching a whopping 8kg in weight without becoming stringy. However, this variety is slow to bolt. Simply roasted, this alien looking vegetable is delicious.

When to Sow Superschmelz Kohl Rabi Seeds

March to July

Where to Sow

Sow seeds thinly in a well prepared seed bed in shallow drills 1.5cm (1/2") deep in rows spaced 30cm apart. Alternatively sow two seeds per cell in modules under glass at 13°C. Sow seed in succession to prolong the cropping period.

What to do Next

Outdoor sowings should be thinned out to 15cm (6in) apart and grown on to maturity. As soon as glasshouse seedlings show their first pair of leaves thin modules to one seedling per cell. Gradually harden off before planting out to the same spacings as detailed above. Harvest when young from the size of a golf ball up to the size of a tennis ball.

Maturity

June to November

Handy Tip

Makes a pleasant change as a vegetable, slice and fry gently in olive oil or use in place of turnips. Roots must be used young, between golf and tennis ball size. Sow successionally to achieve continuous crops
