Rhubarb is not usually thought of as a seed raised plant but it is really easy to grow, and well worth the effort.

'Glaskins Perpetual' Rhubarb seeds are is a very quick to grow, producing bright red sticks with fine flavour over a long period of time. It is very easy to grow from seed in any odd corner of the garden and tastes absolutely delicious in a crumbles, tarts, pies or jams at any time of year. One of the sweetest varieties of Rhubarb as it has the lowest levels of oxalic acid. Heavy cropping!

Where to Sow

Sow in trays in a cold frame or in a seed bed 1cm (1/2") deep.

What to do next

When seedlings are about 15cm (6") tall, transplant to permanent site, spacing 75cm (30") apart. Harvest by grasping the base of the stalks and lift.

Handy Tip

As soon as young shoots show at the beginning of the year, cover some plants with a bucket or upturned pot to produce an early crop. Do not weaken the plant by taking too many stems for the first two seasons. Avoid the leaves as they are poisonous.
