Shiitake Mushroom Log Kit
Internationally renowned for their rich taste and iconic use in gourmet dishes, the shiitake mushroom is a great addition to any grower’s garden. They have potential to fruit for up to eight years in hardwood logs. The most effective and natural way to grow these mushrooms is on hardwood logs using mushroom dowels/plugs.
Traditionally, logs would be inoculated by placing them adjacent to more logs already growing shitake mushrooms, and the spores would naturally infiltrate the new logs. Both the development of the mushroom industry and our knowledge about growing food sources in ways that mimic effective natural processes allow you to get a head start on growing by implanting the mycelium directly into the logs.

Please note that the log is NOT included.
The ideal log would be from a hardwood tree, such as Oak, Beech, Birch, Chestnut, Alder, Ash or Hornbeam, and would have been cut for 2-6 weeks. It should have a diameter of 20-35cm and be 50cm-100cm long. This allows the natural fungicides in the wood to die back, but it's not too long that the wood had dried out or had a chance to be infected with a competing fungi. The bark should be clean an intact, cut any branches off.
Depending on the quality of the log, they can produce several times a growing season, for up to 8 years!
