Herb Hyssop - Perennial

Small amounts of leaves can be added to salads but its pride is the show of blue flowers on a shrubby plant adored by bees. Typically reaches heights of 45cm (18").
Hyssop has rich blue, lipped clustered flowers sat in leaf axils up one side of the stems. Flowers are loved by both bees and butterflies. The stem is square, branching and green and has long aromatic, pointed, dark green leaves which can be slightly hairy.

Where to Sow Hyssop Seeds

In a site which gets full sun, soil needs to be light and well drained.

Sow Inside

Any time from March to September in soil-less compost in seed trays or small pots. Keep moist at 20°C, prick out when large enough.

Sow Outside

Thinly in spring when soil has warmed and cover with fine soil. Keep watered if dry and transplant to growing position when large enough. May be grown in any garden soil, add lime if mecessary, in full sun if possible. Divide roots in spring, take stem cuttings from spring to autumn.

What to do next

Thin to 60cm apart of 30cm for hedging.  Cut back to 20cm in mild winter areas after flowering.

Harvest

Pick leaves any time for drying when the sun is not too hot and just before flowering. Pick flowers as flowering begins.

Uses

The flower and leaf with their sweet smell can be added to pot-pourri.
