When to Sow French Green De Belleville Seeds

March to April

Where to Sow

Sow seeds underglass 0.5cm (¼") deep, in small trays of compost and lightly cover the seeds with a sprinkling of compost, and place at a temperature of 15C. Alternatively, you can sow seeds outside in shallow drills and cover lightly with soil.

What to do next

Prick out seedlings individually to 7cm (3") pots, once large enough to handle. Grow on in cooler conditions, then gradually harden off plants in a cold frame before planting out after risk of frost has passed. Transplant to final positions 30cm (12in) apart or into larger containers. Prefers to be planted in rich moisture-retaining soil in sun or partial shade. Cut the leaves, as required, a few from each plant so that they will regrow quickly.

Harvest

July onwards.

Handy Tip

Water regularly during hot weather, grows well in water retentive soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. When cooking sorrel do not use cast iron or aluminium cookware as this can taint the flavour. We'd recommend an enamel pan is used.

Uses

French sorrel can be uesd to make soup or can be cooked like spinach. Sorrel has a lemony taste.
