Wallflower Bare Root Plants Cultural Information

Bare root has always been the traditional way to buy wallflowers in the autumn, and a method followed by gardeners, parks Superintendents and Nurserymen ever since. Your Wallflowers are supplied as large, mature plants ‘in the green’ and will establish quickly once planted, giving you earlier flowers than small plug plants bought at the same time.
All our wallflowers are field grown in the UK and are lifted, hand graded, packed and despatched within 48 hours to give you the highest quality plants possible.
On arrival, unwrap immediately and give the plants a good drink for 2-3 hours, standing the roots in a bucket of water in a sheltered place. After this initial drink they are ready to be planted into borders spaced 20-30cm apart. Once planted water around the plants well, or as those traditional gardeners would say ‘puddle them in’.
Don’t be alarmed if when your plants arrive a few yellow leaves are showing or develop after planting, these will fall off and soon be replaced by fresh green growth. After planting, these bare root plants may wilt for a few days until established, don’t worry this is normal. Keeping them moist at the root and spraying water over the foliage during dry weather conditions will help them establish quicker.
Plants will start to flower in the spring, filling your garden with their sweet fragrance.
