Buy Fennel vegetable seeds online! Fennel has graceful tall stems with feathery green foliage. Unlike the fennel in the herb section, which are grown for the leaf alone, the Florence Fennel is grown for the bulbous swollen plant base. Used chopped raw in salads, braised as a vegetable or add to a stew or casserole. Fennel is considered to have many health benefits. Both the vegetable plant and the seeds are low in calories but provide many essential vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants.
Sow Fennel seeds thinly direct into a vegetable plot in April or May in rows 2cm deep. There should be 30-45cm left between each row to allow room to grow. Fennel doesn't like root disturbance so should not be transplanted. Thin seedlings as soon as they are large enough to handle to 25-30cm apart. Water well until the plants are established. As the swollen stems start to develop, gradually build earth up around them to preserve the whiteness and flavour. The first crops should be ready to harvest in around 14-16 weeks from sowing.
