Herb Purslane Green Annual

Green Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) produces succulent leaves which can be used sparingly in salads or as a cooked vegetable. Purslane is high in Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, plus magnesium, calcium and potassium.  Their bright green shiny leaves make an attractive plant which grows to a height of about 30cm. Interestingly, this herb is classed as a weed. Pick the leaves regularly to prevent spreading.

When to Sow Purslane Green Seeds

April to July

Where to Sow

Sow in open ground and apply a very light sprinkling of compost but do not completely cover seeds.

Sow Inside

Seeds germinate at 18-20°C.   Place in a tray with compost into a polythene bag or use a propergator until after germination, which should be 10 to 20 days.  Light helps germinaton.

When to Transplant

When seedlings are large enough to handle thin out to 15cm apart. Pick leaves throughout growing season for use in salads.

Harvest

From June to September. The best way to harvest purslane is to pinch off the leafy tips. This is because they grow back almost immediately, so a few plants can furnish a lot of edible purslane.

Uses

Use fresh Purslane leaves in salads and can be cooked like spinach.
