Dwarf French Bean Yin Yang

An intriguing dual purpose bean, that can be harvested as fresh young, tender and tasty green beans. Or they can be left to mature, then shelled to reveal the attractive black and white beans, that can be dried and added to winter casseroles.
The remarkable black and white bean colour pattern, gives them the appearance of a three-dimensional representation of the well-known Yin Yang symbol of Chinese astrology. Sometimes also known as the Orca bean as it is coloured like the killer whale.

When to Sow Yin Yang Dwarf Beans

Sow April to the end of June. Plant out from May to July.

Harvest

July to September.

Where to Sow

Early sowings can be made under glass at a temperature of 16 C, sow into 8cm (3in) pots or modular trays filled with seed sowing compost. Outside sowings can be made from May onwards into the growing site 5cm (2in) deep. Sow 2-3 seeds every 20cm (8in) apart with rows spaced 45cm (18in) apart.

What to do Next

Seedlings sown under glass should be gradually hardened off before planting outside in late May to the above spacing, once all risk of frost has passed. Direct sown seedlings can be thinned out as required. Water regularly during dry weather.

Handy Tip

Harvest regularly when young and keep a high moisture level around the roots as soon as pods start to develop.
