How to Plant Garlic Bulbs
29 November 2024Garlic is a staple ingredient used to flavour many dishes. It is easy for any gardener to grow good garlic. His preferred varieties for autumn planting are Caulk Wight and Rhapsody wight.
Handy Tips:
• Garlic can be sown in autumn and spring, depending on the variety. Most varieties grow better from an autumn planting, and will be ready to harvest early summer.
• Plant in a sunny location with free-draining soil that is not too acidic. The pH level should be over 6.7. You can use a ph test meter to check.
• Growing garlic is fairly easy. Gently separate the cloves and plant each clove about 10cm apart in rows. This can either be direct into the ground or in raised beds. If sowing multiple rows, leave a 30cm space between each. Alternatively, garlic can be planted into pots.
• Plant the with the pointed end facing upwards.
• Once planted, lightly cover with soil. Watr regularly, especially during dry spells.
• They will be ready to harvest once the leaves have turned yellow. Carefully lift with a fork, without damaging the bulbs.
• Use fresh, or dry and store.
