Chilli Pepper Tabasco

One of the world's most recognised chillies. Tabasco chillis are the main ingredient in the spicy sauce called Tabasco. Fruits grow upwards rather than hang down from the stems. The plant looks like an upright bush and reaches heights of around 1 metre. The fruits are small, only around 2.5-3cm long by 1cm wide, and they change colour from light yellow to green to orange before ripening fully red. The chillis have a scoville heat rating of 30,000 - 50,000 SHU.

When to Sow Tabasco Chilli Pepper Seeds

February to April.

Where to Sow

Sow seed on the surface of a free draining compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite and place at a temperature 18-21 degrees C until seeds germinate.

What to do next

Prick out seedlings when large enough to handle into 7cm (3in) pots and grow on under glass. Once plants reach 10cm (4in) high transplant into growbags or 25cm (10in) pots and grow on under glass. Feed once a week with tomato fertiliser after first fruits have set.

Handy Tip

Plants can be tall, to help support the weight of the crop it is best to tie plants to some canes as they grow.
