Where To Sow Calendula, Borage, Nasturtium And Sunflowers

Sow seeds direct into a well prepared flowering site about 1.5cm (1⁄2”) deep, broadcast and rake in.

What to do Next

Plants do not require transplanting, simply thin out seedlings to stop overcrowding.
For earlier sowings of sunflowers, sow indoors, individually in 7.5cm (3”) pots at 20-25°C. When well grown, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out after all risk of frost has passed in a well drained soil in full sun spaced 45cm (18”) apart.

Where to Sow Pansy Seeds

On the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place at a temperature between 15-20°C (59-68°F). When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 23cm (9”) apart. Suggestions how to use Edible flower usage.
CALENDULAS have a slightly peppery taste and will add a light, tangy flavour to breads and soups. NASTURTIUMS Fresh leaves and flowers have a peppery flavour similar to watercress. The flowers will add a spicy touch to salads and the green seeds can be chopped and used with parsley as a garnish or made into capers.
BORAGE Mix flowers into vegetable and fruit salads, or use to garnish soups or to decorate desserts. An excellent choice for freezing in ice cubes and floating on iced tea.
SUNFLOWERS The buds and petals are edible. Add the petals to a green salad for a colour contrast and a mild nutty taste. The green buds can be blanched, then tossed in garlic butter; they are similar in flavour to a Jerusalem artichoke.
PANSIES Flowers have a lettuce-like flavour and make a decorative addition to a green salad or to garnish a pâté or dessert. They can be crystallised and used to decorate cakes, cookies or creamy desserts.
